About the Rising Sun
At one time, Bream was reputed to be the largest village in Gloucestershire and is situated midway between Lydney and Coleford on the B4231. The village is built on a ridge of high ground that provides views over the Forest of Dean and in the distance can be seen the hills of the Cotswolds.
The actual age of the village is not known as there may have been a settlement before the Romans came to the country. Iron ore was being mined here before they came, and the miners would most likely have lived near their work; it is possible that they built shelters close to where they worked. In the village church of St. James are tomb stones dated in the 1600s.
The oldest part of the present village is where the High street and the Lydney to Coleford road meet. The old house Bream Cross originally bore the date 1565.
The Rising Sun Public house can be dated back to 1729 and is probably the oldest currently trading pub in the Forest of Dean.
We are very proud of the history of our village Bream, and our status as the last remaining pub in the village and we hope that you will be too.
We aim to provide a warm and welcoming environment to all our customers – including dogs and children. We support our local village brass band Bream Silver Band, who rehearse twice a week over the road and down the lane at their own band room and often join us for a drink post-rehearsal.
We also have five darts teams (playing on Monday, Thursday and Friday) and a quoits team which we love to support and we welcome all of their opposing teams to our pub - we hope you enjoy your evening with us and visit us again soon.
We have a popular “pay-as-you-play” pool table located in our main bar area. Everyone is welcome to have a game or two.
Our juke box is rarely silent and has an unending selection of music to chose from. We challenge you to try and find a song it won’t play!
On tap, we have a great range including Hawkstone Session Lager, Carling, Staropramen, Estrella Galica and Madri, John Smiths Smoothflow, Caffreys Black (Stout), Rekorderlig Strawberry Lime, plus Thatchers Rascal, Thatchers Gold, Thatchers Haze, Thatchers Apple & Blackcurrant, Thatchers Blood Orange & Thatchers Cloudy Lemon.
In addition we have a regularly rotating selection of real ales such as London Pride, Butty Bach, Ludlow Gold, Ludlow Best (Gluten Free!) and Hicks. If there is a particular beer you would like us to get in please have a chat with Pete and we will see what we can do! Our Gin Menu is unrivalled in the area and our Rums are ever expanding too.
We have a wide range of low and no-alcohol offerings and are always open to suggestions on how to improve and increase our selection.
We hope that we have something to meet your tastes and that you will pop in and see for yourselves – give it a go, we can’t wait to meet you!
